First of all, I can’t wait until the new iPhone comes out next month, because I dropped mine in the toilet several months ago, and yes, though it is amazing the phone works at all, I’m tired of the blurry photos yet not tired enough to get out my camera every time I want to take a pic.  I think my iPhones insides are finally starting to rust and rot, because all manner of strange things are happening with it, like it randomly refuses to send texts sometimes, and asks me if I want to turn on airplane mode for no reason at all. BUT ... Read More

Last week was definitely crazy, and left me feeling crazy in its wake.  The day after Finn’s surgery, I went to the eye doctor and he said that we have been passing around a strange virus from Cuba and Aruba that apparently only shows the diseased eye symptoms in a lucky few (yay, us!)  So, it’s steroid drops for six weeks, and antibiotics for three. We left Friday to meet with Rann’s family in Pigeon Forge, which to me means outlet malls, camouflage, trucker hats and lots of beer.  I realize that there are other treasures ... Read More

This is Finn riding around in the hospital’s Red Flyer before his surgery.  He wasn’t quite so happy after it was done, but the tubes are in, and he is now sleeping it all off at home.  Thanks for your prayers and ... Read More

I called in work sick today, (Sorry, dear clients, I will get to you as soon as humanly possible, I promise).  I have the dreaded eye funk, which we are told isn’t pink eye, but can actually last longer.  Yay!  Supposedly, I’m not contagious unless you actually touch my eyeball (for you dear clients tomorrow), but as with any infection, it brings a general feeling of crappy-ness. I have vampire-albino-bunny-eyes: And apparently, also need to do some eyebrow grooming. Very early tomorrow morning, we take Finn to have tubes put ... Read More

Relationships require vulnerability, and that can really suck.  It would be easier if there was no risk of getting hurt.  One of my favorite movies, “Lars and the Real Girl” explores a creative way of trying to get around the conundrum of love’s risk.  But in the end—we will always need real contact and communication.  This scene features the brilliant Talking Heads song “This Must Be the Place”.  If you haven’t seen the film, please ... This song makes my insides ache.  Tom Waits.  Brilliant. Hold On They hung a sign up in our town ’if you live it up, you won’t Live it down’ So, she left monte rio, son Just like a bullet leaves a gun With charcoal eyes and monroe hips She went and took that california trip Well, the moon was gold, her Hair like wind She said don’t look back just Come on, jim Oh you got to Hold on, hold on Take my hand, I’m standing right here You gotta hold on Well, he gave her a dimestore watch And a ring made from a spoon. Becoming a mom has done many things to me—some you really don’t want to hear about, but one of the great things it’s done, and continues to do, is to get me to freaking lighten up. I’ve been told I come across as serious, deep-thinking, snobbish even.  The truth is, I guard what I say and how I react so carefully because I’m afraid of looking goofy or stupid.  Maybe it was those terrible buckteeth I had as a kid, maybe it’s the ridiculously awkward situations I try so hard to avoid, but still manage to ... It’s amazing how the course of a day can completely change my perspective.  This morning, I was so overwhelmed, I was ready to cancel all of my appointments for a personal mental health day.  But I didn’t, and by the time I left work, I felt hopeful.  Later after I finished dinner with a friend, I was grateful for the many gifts in my life. All week, Rann has had a crazy eye infection that started with an eye swollen, blood red, burning and itching—this also included fever and chills and then–guess what—spread ... Read More
