write shitty

Last night, someone pointed out (rather too happily, I thought at the time) that I had misspelled Tennessee in my last post. Twice.

My first reaction was to head straight to the shame spiral backroad, and dive right into those deep dark waters. Who am I to call myself a writer when I can’t even spell my home state correctly? How the hell did that even happen? I should quit.

Then I remembered Anne Lamott, who always says to write a shitty draft, and go from there. It cheered me  to remember her words. No, I hadn’t proofread my blogpost, I had hit publish (perhaps too) quickly, and I should always check for mistakes before I do that.

But sometimes that’s all you or I can do—just get it out there. Sometimes we don’t have time to double check, and we have to accept the mistakes, learn from them, and move on. Very much like life.

No, I do not have perfect spelling, or grammar, but I believe I still have things to say.

Annnnnnnd. . . I found out this past week that Recovering Ramona won the bronze medal for popular fiction in the Independent Publishing Awards. Thank you so much to everyone who has read the novel, and spread the word. Keep spreading it!

So here’s to accepting our mistakes, and making something out of them.

P.S. If any of you notice misspellings in my posts, feel free to let me know. I will gratefully accept the criticism along with the encouragement.

***I also cut off all my hair today. Cathartic.

Also, Anne Lamott is now on Twitter, and she is equally full of wisdom and hilarity.

Oh my god! Congratulations on the award. The hair cut is awesome. You are awesome. From one Tennesse girl to another Tennnessee girl. Typos and all. Love you.

How important Ramona is in my life as my daughter Alice shares it’s reading now. Congrats on the bronze medal. I wrote a review once when you requested but do not recall where to send it. Shall I send it to you? Have a wonderful day.
